Behind The Mask

“I dealt with depression for a while by medicating with Prozac and although it was good for dealing with the problem there and then, I wasn’t getting to the bottom of my anger and frustration.

“I think we have a real problem these days in that everything is treated with a drug. I think there’s a whole new way of healing depression that doesn’t require drugs — and I’m writing a book about it.”

Amen my Canadian brother.

Whether it be myself, friends or family I have had to deal with depression in its various forms and have seen the first hand effects of medication — whatever form it may take — and have seen the ways in which depression is handled. Usually the (western) answer is medication, then followed by quickly pigeon-holing and labelling the type you have and what can be done to deal with it.

Trust me when I say, it usually ends up with a prescription either way. Which, as Jim points out above, is not helping the core issue. I think that’s why I, personally, am overjoyed that someone in the limelight such as Jim Carrey is about to face his deepest problem and expose how he deals with it and possibly how you can. I find it very impressive and warming to know that he is about to embark on this endeavour.

Many put Jim Carrey down for being the way he is, for doing the films he does, for being the comic he is… but considering what he has had to deal with, how it’s affected his life and how he’s tried, and decided against the usual ‘cures’ (not to forget that a lot of Hollywood-types seem to turn to drugs, in any form, as their end-all fix), he’s certainly maintained his sanity to a degree and it hasn’t stopped him being who he is, and believe me, it’s not at all easy being yourself when you have such a shadow on your mind.

Some may say that he is going the way of the hippy, mind-altering, perhaps even Scientologist ways of helping without drugs, but I don’t believe he will become the Tom Cruise to Brooke Shields.

I commend you for the book you are about to write, Mr. Carrey. I hope it helps you, the people I know are affected by this, and anyone else who seeks to heed your opinion and help.

I think he is smart enough not to deal with any kind of drugs, he has to keep himself away from that cause that would ruin his career and to come up with all the type of characters he performs his brain has to be fresh as a lettuce, I congratulate him on that he is an example.
